Double Standard

I would like to talk about the double standard in the media and how they cover both McCain and Obama. Now before the hatred that will come out read the whole post. First we have the incredibly hateful and disgusting comment made by Obama's Pastor which has received (rightfully) airplay from the media this week. I've always said there is no room for hatred like that. On a side note the IRS is conducting an investigation on him for the sole purpose because he is pro Obama.

Now I made a post earlier in the week about the Pastor who endorsed McCain. He made equally hateful remarks and equally disgusting remarks but there is NO IRS investigation toward him and there is little to no coverage on his remarks toward Jewish people toward the Church about having a slave sale (yes he did do that I have the link on my site) so he is getting a free ride while Obama gets the usual right wing media silent treatment.

Again both made equally hateful disgusting comments but as always the media only covers the Democrat.

I read the link you posted earlier. He made no hateful remarks. He is pro-Israel and pro-Christian. He is making absurd predictions that many Christians and Jews are going to die in what he obviously sees as the battle of Armageddon.

Don't confuse me with agreeing with him. I'm just saying his remarks are nothing like what the Reverend Wright has been spewing.

Here, courtesy of the Democratic National Committee via the Huffington Post, is a list of Pastor Hagee's greatest hits, with citations:

"Hagee on Hurricane Katrina "All hurricanes are acts of God because God controls the heavens. I believe that New Orleans had a level of sin that was offensive to God and they were recipients of the judgment of God for that." [NPR Fresh Air, 9/18/06]

Hagee on Islamic Beliefs
Fresh Air host Terry Gross asked if Hagee believed that "all Muslims have a mandate to kill Christians and Jews," to which Hagee replied, "Well, the Quran teaches that. Yes, it teaches that very clearly." [NPR Fresh Air, 9/18/06]

Hagee on African-Americans
The San Antonio Express-News reported that Hagee was going to "meet with black religious leaders privately at an unspecified future date to discuss comments he made in his newsletter about a 'slave sale,' an East Side minister said Wednesday." The Express-News reported:

"Hagee, pastor of the 16,000-member Cornerstone Church, last week had announced a 'slave sale' to raise funds for high school seniors in his church bulletin, 'The Cluster.'

"The item was introduced with the sentence 'Slavery in America is returning to Cornerstone" and ended with "Make plans to come and go home with a slave." [San Antonio Express-News 3/7/96]

Hagee on Catholicism
"Most readers will be shocked by the clear record of history linking Adolf Hitler and the Roman Catholic Church in a conspiracy to exterminate the Jews." [Jerusalem Countdown by John Hagee]

Hagee on Women
"Do you know the difference between a woman with PMS and a snarling Doberman pinscher? The answer is lipstick. Do you know the difference between a terrorist and a woman with PMS? You can negotiate with a terrorist." [God's Profits: Faith, Fraud and the Republican Crusade for Values Voters, Sarah Posner]

"[T]he feminist movement today is throwing off authority in rebellion against God's pattern for the family." ["Bible Positions on Political Issues," John Hagee]

Hagee on LGBT Americans
"The newspaper carried the story in our local area that was not carried nationally that there was to be a homosexual parade there on the Monday that the Katrina came. And the promise of that parade was that it was going to reach a level of sexuality never demonstrated before in any of the other Gay Pride parades. So I believe that the judgment of God is a very real thing. I know that there are people who demur from that, but I believe that the Bible teaches that when you violate the law of God, that God brings punishment sometimes before the day of judgment." [NPR Fresh Air, 9/18/06]

Hagee on Iran
"The coming nuclear showdown with Iran is a certainty," Hagee wrote [in 2006] in the Pentecostal magazine Charisma. "Israel and America must confront Iran's nuclear ability and willingness to destroy Israel with nuclear weapons. For Israel to wait is to risk committing national suicide." [The Nation, 8/8/2006]"

So, in addition to the usual Armageddon is Coming crap spewed by the Pat Robertson, the late Reverend Falwell, etc. - the very people McCain once denounced before he flip-flopped because his desire for the presidency was greater than his intellectual integrity - Hagee believes:

1. Hurricane Katrina was God's punishment to New Orleans for tolerating gays and lesbians;

2. The Koran teaches all Muslims to kill Christians and Jews;

3. Making fun of slavery is a great way to teach high school students;

4. The Holocaust was a conspiracy for which Hitler and the Catholic Church share the blame.

His antifeminist remarks, though, are pretty typical Southern Baptist fare; so I'll give him a pass on those. As deplorable as the remarks are, they are far from unique.

And, I find his statement on Israel and Iran to be simple realpolitik. It is clearly not in Israel's interest for Iran to become a nuclear power.

Robert considering how many other racist comments I've posted that you never seem to have a problem with doesn't surprise me that you have no problem with this guy AND AGAIN AS ALWAYS you NEVER seem to have a comment about what I actually post about. How about ACTUALLY TALKING ABOUT how come the right-wing media never seem to call on condemning McCain on this freak the same way Obama has to condemn his preacher?

Hagee is an idiot. There is no doubt about it. Don't say I have no problem with him because I do, especially after reading Tom's post.

However, there are two major differences between him and the Reverend Wright:

1. Hagee is not McCain's pastor. McCain never said Hagee is his "spiritual advisor" or any kind of advisor for that matter.

2. Wright's comments are the words of a terrorist. From what I've heard, I'd expect he would get down on his knees and kiss Osama bin Laden's ass and thank him for punishing America. Hagee just comes off as a religious nut. As absurd as some of the things he says are, they don't come across (to me, anyways) as dangerous. His PMS comments are kind of funny and if George Carlin said them, I would have laughed.

But again I will say what is the difference between the two comments and why is the media only convering White and demanding Obama disown him and not demanding the same for McCain and this idiot? And for a change why don't you answer my question!

Robert E Wilson said...

I did answer your question.

Obama called Wright his "spiritual advisor". Obama attended Wright's church most of his life. McCain is not a member of Hagee's church. McCain never claimed to have had any real ties with Hagee.

Wright is practically a terrorist. While not committing acts of terrorism himself, he incites others to do so. Hagee is not a terrorist, he is an idiot.

It's apples and oranges.

Exactly what acts of terrorism is Wright inciting?

McCain's hypocrisy and the dual standard of the media was brought out best this week by that Conservative paragon, Stephen Colbert. Blogger won't allow me to embed, so go to http://www.comedycentral.com/colbertreport/ and look for Wednesday, March 19th, The Word - The Gospel of John.

"Agents of Intolerance," indeed.

Meanwhile, cite the exact "terrorist" threat, and I'll be happy to discuss the reality of rage in the African American community - it's a phenomenon that President-Elect-to-be Obama is the first politician in my memory to have the courage to try to honestly address. Unlike McCain, who claims "straight talk" then flip-flops the moment it might cost him a vote.

And Robert if you have seen the pass from the media that McCain received after him not knowing what Purim is for Israel and the fact that he claimed (and was corrected by Lieberman) that Iran was training Al Queda and foreign policy is allegedly McCain's strength you are supporting a complete moron for President that will make Bush look intelligent which I thought would be impossible.

Tom,

Although they were sound bites and they perhaps, could have been taken out of context, a bit, just about everything Wright has said invites violence.

"The government lied about inventing the HIV virus as a means of genocide against people of color"

I interpret this as him saying "All you black people out there, your own government wants you dead."

If that isn't inciting violenc/terrorism, I don't know what is. The L.A. riots were spurred on less than this.

Erik,

Once again, just because I critique your assertions, you say I support McCain. That's a giant leap on your part and it is wrong. You seem to have the "if your not with me, you're against me" mentality. Yet, I know you consider yourself open-minded.
