Good in Theory

There is an interesting op-ed piece in today's Los Angeles Times by of all people Michael S. Dukakis (yes the one that embarassed the Democrats in 1988) and Arthur H. Purcell.

The piece said that it's time for a high speed rail between Los Angeles and San Francisco. I agree with that 100 percent. There are a few problems.

Everyone knows the traffic here in Los Angeles is legendary and I understand it's getting as bad in San Francisco. Everytime, and I mean everytime soemone tries to do something that will try to eleviate the problem people just complain and complain they don't want it where they live. They are called NIMBY. Not in my BackYard.

You want examples here in Los Angeles (I'm sure it's the same in any city) here you go. We have an unfinished freeway in Pasadena. It was supposed to connect to a freeway here but construction stopped cause the residents sued to prevent it. When the subway was being built when the new busway was being built the NIMBY's did everything in their power to prevent it.

Really the problem is everyone knows how bad traffic is. The real problem is winning the minds of the people who are against doing anything about it no matter how much it hurts.
